Cross-Faculty Units & interventions

The cross-faculty units offer courses and other interventions supporting students’ development of a range of academic and research literacies needed for successful study at university.

The Language Development Group offers specialised stand-alone courses, adjunct modules, and workshops, targeting in the first place students whose mother tongue is not English, although increasingly all students across the faculties show the need for academic language development. Interventions are mostly based in academic disciplines, and apart from teaching students directly, staff also work closely with colleagues all over campus on how to integrate academic literacies in the academic disciplines. The Language Development Group is also very active in developing interventions and short courses for postgraduate students in collaboration with other CHED departments and the Office of the Director of Postgraduate Studies.  Click to view Contributions to postgraduate provision.

The Writing Centre [http://www.writingcentre.uct.ac.za/], which is part of the Language Development Group, provides a service to both undergraduate and postgraduate students through individual writing consultations and workshops on academic writing. Based on trends and patterns observed in consultations and workshops, curriculum needs are identified and referred back to the larger Language Development Group, frequently leading to further language development work based in disciplines and curricula. A new Writing Lab which will be launched later this year has started operating on the Faculty of Health Sciences campus.

The Numeracy Centre promotes students' access to and success in quantitatively demanding study programmes. The Centre currently offers quantitative literacy courses and other interventions in the Humanities, Law and Health Science faculties, helping to ensure that students and graduates are quantitatively literate.

A range of cross-faculty postgraduate interventions are offered in collaboration with other CHED departments and the Office of the Director of Postgraduate Studies.
